Downloading Netscape Navigator
Netscape Navigator is one of the best web browsers. Unfortunately, it
is also a memory-intensive program that hogs system resources and can
cause problems with older Macintoshes. Do not attempt to use Netscape
Navigator unless you have at least eight megabytes of physical
RAM (not RAM Doubler or Virtual Memory). If you don't have this much
RAM, you may try Microsoft
Internet Explorer, which is a little less intensive, but slightly
less powerful too.
- Double-click on the Connect to Texas.Net alias in the TexasNet
folder and then click on Open. Your modem should dial and successfully
log in. You will know you are connected when the PPP down icon changes to a
PPP Up icon.
- After you are logged in, open the TexasNet folder and double-click on
the Fetch 2.1.2 icon. Fetch will open.
- In the Open Connection window, enter the following information:
- Click the OK button. If you get an "Access Denied" error
message, consider that a busy signal and try again.
- After a successful connection to Netscape's site, a listing of
folders and/or files will be displayed. Double-click on the type of
machine you have (PowerPC or Motorola 680x0 processor), then on
'navigator_complete'. Double-click on the Comm4.72_Complete_EX.bin file.
This will download the file to your machine.
- During the download, Fetch will ask you where to save this file.
Select a destination and click Save. A good spot to save
this file is the Desktop or your TexasNet folder. The download may
take up to 30 minutes to complete.
- After the file has been downloaded and converted, there will be a
'netscape 4.27' installer icon. Double-click on this icon to
start the installation process. When Netscape is installed, you may delete
the installer icon. Netscape will be in its own folder. Double-clicking
on the Netscape icon will start up Netscape and allow you browser the web.
Now that Netscape is installed, try looking around. A good place to
start is our Links Page. You will find
many interesting sites and possibly some useful areas as well. For
further Mac software, check out our Software
Page. You can find many other utilities and applications that will
help you online.
